You're right, Chrissie, I use AdBlock Plus. I'd recommend it to anyone, it's easy to disable for specific web pages or sites.

I have a new laptop that came with a Norton 'trial' but fully intend to replace it with AVG free version soonest. I used to be happy with Avast until an update resulted in every program on my PC being flagged as a virus; I panicked right royally and replaced it with AVG - have never had a problem with it. Fox

Here's a pdf from AV-Comparitives summary tests last year. It has most of the big companies in it, but not all. If anyones feeling a litle geeky or doesn't know what to choose, it may be worth a look. They are an independant AV testing company. Test results are usually varied and whoever pays for them wins, but these are fairly accurate imo www.av-comparatives.org/images/stories/test/summary/summary2010.pdfPersonally I use Kaspersky on my laptop and Comodo on my desktop. I prefer these 2 over anything else as they let me control what to do with suspicious files, rather than something that automatically deletes things. All though they can be run on auto. Im debating whether to try Avast's new Internet Security as I won a license at Xmas, but im happy with what i've got. (will probably try it again lol) I like security software

I use Microsoft Security Essentials - initially because I was so surprised that M$ offered it for free, and subsequently because it is so darn invisible Also use SuperAntiSpyware, Pro version (a special offer I couldn't refuse), Malwarebytes. I cannot cope with firewalls so leave it to the MS antivirus to liaise with standard Windows firewall. It seems logical that they'll get on well together ??? AdBlock Plus also helps, if the latest eBay probs are anything to go by, as I haven't been troubled by them. scylla

I thought I was safe but it's got me Had a warning box come up earlier on today saying that Firefox had detected an unsafe site (or words to that effect) . I panicked & tried to click out, but too late - a new page came up with what looked like an AV scan going on - but it wasn't my AV scanning Again, I tried to click out but have been told that's the worst thing I could have done I've run Avast & malwarebytes scans & they haven't come up with anything. However, from some of the techies on ebay SC & tech board, that doesn't mean anything & that my lappy is toast unless I wipe it So might not be around for a while

Hold on Chrissie, a complete reformat may not be necessary, especially since Avast and malwarebytes didn't find anything. I got this from Rolygate: www.techsupportalert.com/Go to Gizmos Software Review and download F-Secure Blacklight to check your rootkit and any other good programs, to check your computer. You may also want to find the name of the virus that you think infected you and Google it to see if there is any info on how to check for it and delete it , if you have it.

Chrissy doesn't sound like your infected if the fake av was just a web page? It tells you your infected but you have to download it to actually get infected. Either way try a scan with Hitman Pro also. Very good prog. If that and MBAM say your clean you probably are.

Thanks for that, Fruity - I've downloaded it and I see that you only have to pay for it if you wish it to remove whatever nasties is finds. So €20 would only have to be shelled out if it finds something... yes? Which would be cheap at half the price EDIT - I'm frantically reading the eBay threads re this problem - believe it or not, you do NOT have to download or click on anything to be infected - the mere appearance of an ad hosted by a particular advertising service provider will do it by simply appearing on your screen. It's the service provider that has been hacked. From a web advertising specialist: The ad agency uses coding to control what ads are shown when and where, provides the correct click-through link, tracks clicks and sales via cookies. All this coding is hosted on what is essentially a webpage, one no-one usually sees apart from the banner which forms the advert. It is a part of this 'script' page that has been compromised. The malicious code is in the 'script' webpage hosted by the ad agency and will run when the page is accessed to show a banner ad. No click needed. The only safe way to avoid this ATM is to avoid eBay AND the other sites whose advertising is provided by the ad agency, like Auto Trader for instance All that is E&OE, because the information I'm getting is not from any horse's mouth SEE THIS! www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-12608651I see they say "Thank goodness it was a Sunday evening" - well Sunday's are not quiet on eBay! SCARY FACT (1) Chrissie runs AdBlock and was still infected. SCARY FACT (2) You don't need to click on anything to be infected, just view a webpage with the rogue ad on it. SCARY FACT (3) MACs are being infected too!!! ALSO - I didn't realise that the following was in eBay Preferences - you can opt out of being shown targetted ads - scroll down and untick the box (if yours is ticked, like mine was): cgi6.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?AdPreferenceCmdscylla

Thats not good, Ebay should have sorted it by now. You could try a couple of Firefox addons to prevent it if you have to go to Ebay, but I don't know if they will work. (bit late now anyway) Noscript- prevent scripts from running, and Ghostery- blocks advert tracking and ads etc. Theres probably a lot more. Hitman Pro will clean for 30 days free Scylla. When 30 days run out it will just scan. I don't clean with mine, so still have 30days if/when I need it I just use it to identify and clean/delete with other progs. Im not going to look into Ebay for obvious reasons, but its ridiculous if they haven't sorted it out yet. They make enough money from us.

Dare I say it Fruits . . . but this is so typical of Ebay. For a company of it's size, it's a joke at times.

Noscript- prevent scripts from running, and Ghostery- blocks advert tracking and ads etc. I've tried NoScript in the past and found it too complicated and intrusive - I know, I know, but I did! Ghostery, I've never come across, will check it out I only heard about Hitman Pro yesterday and didn't realise you can actually do a clean without paying. I recommended it to Chrissie, will have to let her know about the 30-day thing. It reports no nasties on my lappy but I'd had no symptoms anyway. scylla
