Didn't think of that - you won't be able to get BBC iplayer in the US. I'm trying to download it now to save it but it will be too big to email. I might have to video it from my screen then upload to YouTube. Or I'll get Andy to sort it out - that sounds like a far easier option

I don't really have to see it, Jaki, I already have a good idea of what they say.

Just quickly watched the clip . . . so much for unbiased reporting by the BBC.

hiya guys Something smells really fishy around here, and I'm sure I had a bath in the last month so it cant be me! Oil??? Does anyone know what brand this person was supposedly vaping, that would contain oil? I think a telephone call to this Dr. Allcock might be in order...... While I am here, and a total newbie, what is this vape TV? that we need to be supporting? I'm afraid ive never heard of them, or the electronic cigarette trade association (SP?)

It never fails to amaze me that they can pick up on one single death and make a mountain out of it! I see there wasn't any mention of all those that had heart attacks and other failures and died after taking the the new miracle drugs to help them stop smoking. Or those that have been killed by taking 'anti-abuse.' The tobacco companies have lost out on billions over the past few years, everything they sponsored, all their years of hard hit advertising has now gone. There products have been taxed to the hilt, now ciggies are going below view in shops, these companies are going to be twisting as many arms, paying as many medical professionals off as they can to try and keep the miniscule business they now have left..........call me cynical:) On the other side, are PG and VG not oils? Or is the stuff I bought from Tesco to weaken my 36mg juice the wrong stuff? *slightly worried I may be being a bit blonde and have poisoned myself*

Thats the one thing that is bothering me Dee,if this bloke had oil in his lungs it must have been from the filled carts that came with his kit?I dont think many people will be so stupid as to vape unknown oils such as hemp oils?I guess no one actually knows the truth and we are all merely guessing here.Ive been thinking about this last night and i suppose anything inhaled into the lungs can be an irritant and potentially dangerous.

Ian I know that my lungs are 1000% better now than they were a year ago. I wouldn't have been able to do my scuba PADI certificate if I'd still been a smoker, I've tried and failed so many times previously through panic attacks caused by not being able to take in enough air.
I know ecigs are a much safer alternative to smoking but I would imagine there must be some miniscule risk associated with them as with everything else.
Although ecigs produce vapour the vapour is from oil rather than steam from water. I would imagine that this is why it hangs in the air for so long after exhaling it. This could explain a small amount of oil particles in the lungs. Unfortunately for us the medical profession would pick on this immediately as they're trying their damnedist to find a reason to ban ecigs - after all what is it they push so hard to give smokers - nicotine replacements; I would imagine that the tobacco companies have a very big hand in this multi billion pound / dollar / Euro enterprise too!

I think we need to be realistic here. it IS possible that his inhalation of the vapour contributed to his death, we dont know what state his lungs were in, we dont know what pre-existing conditions or congenital abormalities may have been in place to cause the reaction. It reminds me of the discussion about "hypoallergenic". Most people assume this means you wont be allergic to it. Not the case at all, it just means that the chances of a reaction are lower as its not a common allercenic antigen. E.g.... everything is hypoallergenic unless your allergic to it Someone seemingly perfectly healthy may die from a burst blood vessel caused by taking an aspirin.... yet millions of people take aspirin daily as a benefit to their health. It doesnt mean its safe for all. We know that nicotine is toxic in large quantities, perhaps he had a faulty cartridge which was alloing liquid to leak in significant quantities, perhaps he was vaping something unusual (ive heard of someone vaping a liquid viagra type stimulant!!!), perhaps he had a pulmonary condition anyway which meant that vaping was the last thing he should have been doing. We just dont know, and it seems that not enough tests were undertaken by the coroners to get to the bottom of things. Either way, with 12000 uk smoking related deaths in the UK a year, and 1 possible (but far fetched) vaping related death... I think the figures speak for themselves as to which is the better alternative. We all know there are risks, we knew there were risks with smoking, and we make a decision based on weighing up those risks, NOT on scaremongering or hearsay.

oh and as for Dr Allcock, a quick google has highlighted that he was one of the primary forces behind the movement which banned smoking in public places. I'm afraid based on what I have read he is very much part of the "quit or die" brigade. He cant see that there may be a way for smokers who have been unable to quit, to reduce the harm of smoking and so improve their health.
I have only been vaping a very short period of time, but I can tell already that my taste buds are returning, my lungs are clearer (no more morning cough), and I generally have more energy!
