Right. Sorry it wasn't up earlier. Doing this on my mobile so hope it's not too big. I've cropped the kids out from the left of the photo but other than that its exactly as it was when taken. Was your mother in the habit of carrying some small snacks around for those odd moments when a nibble might appeal? I'm thinking of pocket-sized salami or a whole range of German or Italian sausages, one of which might have slipped out place, given the movement of holding the baby. Chorizo? LOL. I really wish it was a peparami now lol. Sadly no she wasn't.

Did your mum have a bag on that shoulder? She didn't. I had hold of it.

It looks to me like a hem (with a button on it) on the end of a bit of clothing (or a scarf, or whatever). Note the line of the material. Why else would it stop where it does, if that's not the hem?

Hi Jerri, it's not possible to get a traditional double exposure with a digital camera as the data from a shot cannot superimpose onto the data from a previous shot. It is possible to get corrupted files which share data but they are usually very obviously knackered and have abundant pixelation. As a digital and printed picture restorer I have seen several images like this and it is almost always a reflection of the person taking the photo. The most common is with people who wear glasses taking the pic in front of a window or other reflective surface. If you would like to email a copy of the photo to me I can probably restore it 100% for you. Drop me a PM. Examples of my work are available on request, but hey it's a freebie.

Maybe it's just me, and I have no way of knowing who and what was around at the time, but to me it looks like there are two different black fabrics. The one on your mother's sleeve is a fleece, it has big, fluffy, fat folds. The one to the right of the phantom finger looks a slightly deeper black and has crisper, thinner folds. I would therefore suggest that it's someone else's sleeve, right arm/thumb trying to support either the baby or your mum's arm.

It could be Jen, but it looks like an unnatural position to me.
Could also be a bag?

It would only have to be an unnatural position for the millisecond it takes to take the picture, but I take your point

In that light it's probably closer to 1/400th of a second

Love this thread. So many different opinions and everyone sees something different. Just to be clear. It's not a 'fake'. I didn't stage it in any way shape or form. There has been no photoshop. I took a picture of my mum with the kids and noticed this.

I asked my daughter last night to photoshop it up(was going to offer it if it worked out ok but noticed you ve got a mate sorting it out)Anyways....picking up on what Raid said im wondering if you can recall what you were wearing that day(as the photoshopped pic seemed to highlight a smoother black material like a light summer jacket with the thumb coming from the sleeve of the jacket)
Sorry bit rushed as only on a five minute break
