I have a problem with the next door neighbour as she keeps banging on my wall in the early hours to turn the music down, the thing is I am in bed and all is silent my end. Last night was the worse. 1.50 am bang bang bang bang repeatedly, I said to myself I will talk to her in the morning as there was no way she was going to open the door in the early hours but within seconds the door knocker goes, by the time I got downstairs she had vanished (elderly women don't half move fast) presuming it was her. I even asked the neighbour on the other side did he knock just to make sure and he said no but he did hear the banging. I have called on her door today but there was no answer so I am expecting her to kick off again tonight. I told her the first time that I didn't hear any music when she started banging two months ago but she is convinced that it's me.
Any ideas on how to deal with a elderly lady who is most of the time pleasant.
She is depriving me of sleep.
This thread is vaping related because when I am awake the more I vape.

Does anybody else hear this music other than her? You've been a lot more patient than I would at that time of the morning!!

Sounds like she's sleepwalking or getting delusions. Either way, probably not much point in you trying to deal with her yourself as she probably won't remember the next day. Does she have a daughter or some other carer who visits who you could talk to?

Can you record her knocking, and then play it back to her, showing her there is no music?

Does she have a daughter or some other carer who visits who you could talk to? That's what I would suggest too. Elderly folk often get "confused" and trying to sort things out with them can be very difficult. It might be she is hearing music, but can't tell where from so as you are closest she is just assuming it's you. The last thing you need is an ongoing "war" with anyone elderly. Hope you can get this sorted as there's nowt worse than being woken in the middle of the night for no reason.

XTC - No one else hears the music except her, the funny thing is the first time when she said the music was awful so I asked her what genre was it and she said she didn't know. Giles - She has two sons the visit her but I have not seen anything of them lately.
Fred That's a great idea, I will record the banging if she kicks off again which is more than likely.

If she has dementia she could well be hearing music from a different time and place; you could try apologising and tell her it won't happen again. If she believes you then it might not.

I was a full time carer for my mum so I do understand the elderly which is why I have the patience of a saint but if the elderly neighbour carries on I will inform the authorities.
Thanks for the suggestions all

Another thing you could do, is put some music on & invite her in to listen. (No, this isn't going where you think ) Then go back next door & show her she can't hear it. As long as you're confident she won't, of course. Good Luck.

Stamina..I'm sure by the tone of your posts that you will be able to sort this out.You obviously understand old people and that is a huge advantage. So many folk nowadays forget that ..if they're lucky..they'll be old themselves one day, maybe with no-one to care for them when they need it.

I spent 90 minutes next door trying to sort this out. She still thinks its me despite me saying I will take a polygraph test so I suggested that she phone me when she hears' the radio or any type of music coming from my house in the early hours and by phoning me you will hear total silence, She agreed. Rest of the conversation went like this. (she)- is my toilet flush to loud - (me) - no its very much the standard ( weird thing to say). Then it was chit chat and ended up fixing her kitchen draw. As I was leaving I said can your hear your telly, she said no - so I said why don't you turn the volume up. she said it might be to loud for the neighbours, I said you turn it up and I will go to mine and if I can hear it I will tell you. I couldn't hear it and she was happy. Sounds like peace was made today but still no treaty signed and definitely no apology was given. thanks for the suggestions all. Anyone selling a drum kit

stamina well done, I only suggested the apology because sometimes you just have to go with the fantasy. Sounds like the answer was just spending some time with her especially if the sons haven't been to see her for a while. Thankfully she has a good neighbour.
