Over the last 48 hours, I have eaten what are unquestionably three of the best butties in the world.
Butty 1 -
Granary bread, English mustard, raw spinach, slices of onion, smoked mackerel, pickled beetroot, horseradish sauce.
Butty 2 -
Granary bread, thick-spread avocado and garlic, roast beef, spring onion, celery, bunch of watercress, English mustard.
Butty 3 -
Oven-bottom barmcake, English mustard, smashed up black pudding (a proper one, from Bury Market, not the feeble supermarket slices), crispy bacon, fried egg, ketchup.
I am confident these are jewels of the butty-makers' art, but would be keen to hear of others that approach their greatness.

OliverB you have obviously just been let out so i will not hold that against you you are part right though all best butties begin with granary but in between the grainy granary you MUST have lashings of butter, and plenty of bacon fat, dripping is optional but advisable.

I've not got time to discuss this. I have a bacon, part-melted brie and white sliced-grapes toastie lined up in the Kitchen.

Butter, yes, but not lashings, surely. Nor bacon fat or dripping, unless of course, one wishes to perish horribly.

Peanut butter, the crunchiest you can get, with over-ripe mashed banana. Any bread will do, but the butter (not make believe, *I Can't Believe It's Even Got Butter In The Name* type axle grease) should be slight salted, and sliced on at least 0.5mm thick from the fridge (unless it's winter and the heating is off). All the benefits of one portion of your "5 a day", with carbs, protein, and natural fat. Eat 5 a day and you should live for ever.
