It seems that over the past year, TC mods have proliferated all over, as the technology has evolved. It seems hard now to find a recently released mod that doesn't have it. The costs have plummeted recently due to 'style' type mods coming on the market. I know there are issues with some units which do or don't do as is claimed, but even that seems to be diminishing as the technology improves. So are we now in the age of TC and where does the technology go from there? More recently it seems bigger is better, and that seems to be where the higher price points come in. Where VW/VV was all the rage, that has been added to by TC.
So what is coming down the line? Auto selection of coil, Ni/Ti/SS/Ka? Auto selection of temperature to suit the coil and juice? It seems that there isn't much more that can be done to improve the units apart from further miniaturisation. Better batteries? Different metals for the coils? I guess the winner will be the manufacturer who can pack all that in a pencil sized mod with an output of 200w, TC, .001ohm capability, subohm rebuildable atty, with 10ml capacity tank, that lasts all day on one charge is onto a winner.

I'd love longer lasting batteries. With tc and higher watts, I'm struggling to make one last a day now. Get about 4 to 6 hours out of one on a good day but I'm still a heavy vaper

I don't know where it will all end. I am not into TC although I do have the Smok XPro 80W is which supposed to be TC but isn't, but I just use it as a VV/VW 'normal' mod just to have the capability of 80W, which I have never yet used. I don't think that I will ever need a device that is 200W plus, unless I suppose I get into the build your own coils, and using these special wires, and..............well, it is all beyond me. I get a couple of days use out of my Smok and MVP3 Pro and maybe the Coolfire IV, but the battery life doesn't really bother me, as I just take the tank off and shove it on another one, and charge up the 'dead' one. Or the ones that need a battery is fine too, because I have enough spare charged batteries to use, so it is only a matter of seconds to swap batteries, and shove the 'dead' one in to the charger. I suppose the same is with tanks, now they all seem to be low ohm and direct lung inhalers, whereas I am just an old stick in the mud and just use the 'old' style tanks and I buy the coils for them. Altough I do have some low ohm tanks for a bit of a change. I am not into huge clouds as I just like a flavour, but, blowing some clouds on say my iSub is quite fun.

Things are going to move away from 18650 batteries IMO, they will still be widely used for a few years, but there are too many mods ATM that are pushing these to their limits and the results are either lower than advertised output, poor battery runtime or a mix of both. Temp limiting is here to stay, there will continue to be refinements and hopefully atty manufactures, 510 manufactures and wire vendors will do a better job in the near future.
The auto selection ideas in the 2nd paragraph are difficult keeping the open system (510 connection). Since the DNA40 Evolv have had good auto wire sensing and the 200 takes it further, but still just temp sensing wire or non-TS because of the single connection limitation.
There is still a lot that can be done to improve these units, the electronic and software approaches for temp limiting vary drastically. The quality of tanks, coils and 510s have been a large hindrance to temp limiting and there is plenty of scope for improvement here.
We probably see different wires and maybe wicks to.
Batteries chemistry advances are less likely in the short to medium term as the very long R&D time and being a mature technology, but we may see different packaging or more use of LiFePo4 (safer than LiPo, but a little less power).
Low ohms: we need better 510 connectors for a start with that especially for temp limiting. 10 ml tanks: 2 ml will me the legal max in 9 months time unless TW win their TPD challenge.
I would like to see the 510 replaced by a more sturdy universal connector, but there are no signs of this happening, Zen tried and it didn't catch on.

Definitely feel that it will be on Battery Technology that big changes will come. All the batteries at the moment were developed for Torches, RC vehicles, handheld and laptop computers etc and have certainly reached their limits. We need a technology that will allow us to charge a Mod and even at the lowest resistance and highest power will last for 2-3 days in the hands of a chain smoker.

I'm having a seriously sleep deprived think about mods And thinking mods and turning out like any other gadget - you want the latest 'trendiest' mod - you are going to pay mega bucks (over £50) - you want 'last year's/last month's' model - you are going to pay a lot less So how can the anti's say that vaping costs a lot (unless you are a mod destroyer?)? - hmmm This is proven by my recent holibobs I took a cheap £10 mech mod with me - a heap of batteries (that I lost/fell out of daysack) and 2 £12 second hand mods from classies plus an RG400 (fast tech) and a load of SOCC heads ($5 for 5 - used 1 a day) and my own juice in travel bottles and a heap of strong mints (altoids - am also hooked on those LOL). Had a no vape stress holiday . I've done the rebuilding atties enough times when away to know how one small missing component and you're back on the stinkies. It's just not cost effective!!! So yeah the mods from classies were variable power - it really didn't cost a lot It's not about looking cool with the biggest box mod I can find either - unless you're in the middle of a city outside at 2am! So yeah mods may change but whatever set up you have vaping is here to stay and that's all that matters

I think the future should be little robots that hand you a fully charged fully ready device, with the juice that you want at that moment, of course order all your supplies, handle re-wicking etc, while we're about it they can do the house cleaning, cooking, shopping.................................
Always lived in cloud cuckoo land me lol

I wonder if the drive to tc was sparked by the false tests done in Japan were they heated the coil over what a vaper would or could use and the mod makers thought that will be a safety factor we can build in,because set at the highest possible for the mod the coil would still be safe for vaping?

I guess the biggest problem with the size of mods is the battery. Especially as mods get into the mega watt territory as they seem to be doing. The newer lithium batteries are an improvement on the NiCd batteries of old in terms of cycle and holding their charge. An interesting article on battery developments can be read HERE. Well worth a read if you can't sleep and are interested in the science behind our technology. But it does look like things are changing on the battery front that will no doubt be adopted in out mods of the future.

I've often wondered why on earth the 510 became the universal connector, considering the relatively weak mechanics of it... a full ego connector would make more sense in this department...

All it would need is a major manufacturer to come up with a better one, and offer some sort of adaptor so as not to render older atties redundant. But that would need a very courageous manufacturer to do it. Unless there is some sort of financial advantage I can't see it happening.

As above, manufacturers would need to get together, as they do for computer interfaces etc, but I just can't see it, as not enough really big corporations involved as in Microsoft, Apple, Google, Dell etc.

I can't see how an adapter would be viable, it would have to be a new standalone design. If you used an adaptor then it wouldn't matter how good the new connector was you'd still have the old 510 on your old atty as the weak link electrically.

Where are Philips when you need them? They always came up with the best ideas.
