Update: I got a tub of margarine and pack of Oxo cubes delivered along with my packet of biscuits Sounds delicious ??! Bunged the driver £20 as a tip I feel sorry for the poor sods. Very generous of you... I'm sure that they appreciated it, at this difficult time.

they should remove trolleys and only allow shopping by basket you can only carry so much and would reduce the bulk buying, large families could always return to purchase further goods but again only what they can carry

Pain in the arse but can't do nothing about it. Things could be worse I could be one of the poor sods in ICU or dead or having to work my arse off round the clock battling this thing. Gotta keep your chin up and count your blessings.

For some of our less mobile customers they use their trolley as a walking aid and pop their sticks in it along with often very few items of shopping . . . . we've also run out of baskets on numerous occasions, we're under sooooooooooooo much pressure like you wouldn't believe, trying to fill shelves and get customers through tills with as little delay as possible. That there simply hasn't been the available manpower for the simple task of returning hand baskets to their normal location.
Our Chairman announced yesterday that all John Lewis stores are to temporarily close, for the first time in 155 years - that's how unprecedented this situation is. We're anticipating as we've a large JL not that far away, having some extra pairs of helping hands in the coming days. We're still offering our very popular Click and Collect service - so we're bracing ourselves on that front!
It's worth remembering that any and everyone who works or is connected to the business of providing food and supplies for all is knowingly putting themselves at risk on a daily basis, social distancing are just two words to us and certainly don't apply to our work in any way shape or form.
We're all doing our very, very best and I'm really quite proud to be playing a teeny weeny part in this crisis.

Around here the big supermarkets are struggling to cope with demand however the independant shops and smaller corner shops etc. seem to have plenty of stock - they are just being overlooked. Yes there has been some attempts to profiteer but those are very quickly identified and are being named and shamed on the local facebook group thats come together to help coordinate local info and I think they will soon regret having attempted to "cash in" on the situation. The local taxi company has responded by offering to pick up and deliver peoples click and collect orders for the cost of a single journey from the store to your home. Makes sense for them as I doubt as many people will be using taxis at the moment and their school contracts etc. will be on hold. Most places have said they are going contactless payment only or card readers only and are wiping them down after every transaction - cash is not being accepted in many places (not sure how legal that is). The local butchers, deli's and vegs shops have all switched over to offering orders by phone and either delivered or you can wait in your car outside and your order will be brought out to you. Many of the pubs that have had to close switched over to offering a take away/ home delivery food service. Several of the take aways have closed to face to face customers and are only offering online orders and home delivery or drive through.
You can't get a webcam (unless you want to fork out for a high end spec) anywhere even Amazon didn't have any when I was trying to get one last week and that was before the working from home advice was in place - I was very lucky in that my husband went to the other side of the city to a Currys that had said it had no stock online but he went on the offchance and got me the last one they had in store - it was on the wrong hook so presumably had been overlooked.
Anecdotally I've been told you can't currently get a freezer - I checked on AO and thats not strictly true but the cheaper ones are all out of stock.

I work in a mental health charity and we were already busy, but the last couple of weeks has been awful. We are having to make very difficult decisions about the balance between protecting our staff, the general public, and supporting the more vulnerable people that we work with. I know we are not alone in this - everyone (rightly) praises doctors and nurses but people serving in supermarkets and many other public facing jobs are bearing the brunt of everyone's anxiety, fear and panic and are not getting enough praise for sticking with it, I think. It's not uncommon in local shops, supermarkets and small eating places to ask people how they are and have them burst into tears - Friday evening and Saturday morning were especially sad, with people seeing businesses they have worked years to build closed down - we have lots of cafes down our high street and some of them are real community hubs, with many people relying on them for food and some company- now just suddenly shut. One really nice little cake shop had all it's orders for birthdays and weddings cancelled within a couple of days and the people who run it can't see how it will survive, or how they will earn a living. There is hope too, in that a lot of people are doing what they can to keep the essential things going and help others - we have joined a local group that co-ordinates neighbours to shop and collect medication etc for people. I hope everyone here and their families stay well and safe
