James - also PMSL - and hope that Prof and Mike can take our humour as it is meant. I would soooooo love to see Mike in his entirety. He has such a 'knowing' face - which is so unusual for a shelled creature. Prof, I love him (Mike that is.) More of him please.

I hope I didn't offend Prof - or Mike - with my wrong assumption. I would love to see a picture of the whole of him - Mike that is, not Prof. Am I making it worse? No offense Here is all of him (well he has his neck pulled in actually):

Prof - am really pushing my luck here with your good very good nature - but am totally PMSL now. Poor little guy looks as if he took his teeth out at at bedtime, and now can't find them. But I do love him - honest. I love the unusual - which sort of explains my dogs! I have never seen one of those turtles before, so thanks for sharing.

He's not that small - about 10" length shell with a neck of a good six inches at full stretch. He doesn't have teeth - he has a sharp bony "beak" arrangement inside his mouth (and an industrial strength bite). He is a "rescue turtle" - he would have ended up as soup. I got him from my oldest son (who is a herpetologist). His shell is flexible (hence "soft-shell"). He will live around 30+ years... Here's an action shot:

Prof those pics of Mike are amazing. Like Hanow, I have never seen a soft shell turtle before. On the other hand, I knew he wasn't a snake Looks like he's well cared for & happy.

He looks in fantastic condition Prof. That is a pretty long life-span for something so small. Can he/does he spend any time out of water?

Does Mike have any friends, Prof? A goldfish maybe? Or would he eat any friends? Mike is no vegetarian I'm afraid - he will eat ANYTHING that goes in the tank, including my finger unless I'm careful. (I'm very careful, he can bite a small - dead - mouse clean in half) He eats: Waxworms, worms, (defrosted) prawns, bits of cold meat like turkey, locusts, and small defrosted mice. He has big claws but they are (luckily) not too sharp:
