I'm used to quite structured meeting procedures Lee, that we have on the local council I serve on and did think of mailing Roly with a few suggestions on procedure . . . . although I'd hate him to think I was trying to teach my granny to suck eggs . . . plus I think the sound problems didn't help the order of business at all. The techy troubles were a pain - however, tonight's meeting at Scott's may help get things moving. I think the idea of "open" meetings is a good one, but it would have been much easier to coordinate had everyone joined the Skype effort. It's practically impossible to keep the sound and chatroom in synch on any of the Ustream type feeds. That said, ECCA is also looking at GoToWebinar as a platform - it'll take 100 folk with audio and in-synch text chat. |

The timing is not, I think, coincidental. Once NICE prognosticates on NCPs such as e-cigs and their inclusion in a harm-reduction policy under the aegis of the DoH, then MHRA's case is strengthened massively. They can then regulate under that policy - so, not just medicinal, but also hard reduction. This is a very complex game of chess, and these buggers are changing the rules as they go along!!

Sorry for delay in reply Dave, been working today . . . . I downloaded the Skype from the link I posted above . . . is that the right one? One other question *whispers* will you be able to see me . . . as I normally resemble a bag of nails when at the computer. :-[ If you felt strong enough, I could PM you my Skype ID for a test run.  Edit to say . . . I've done a test run of the Skype thing and all seems to be working ok! If the lappy has a webcam, it is very likely also to have a mic and speakers - I'd say you're good to go...
Skype 5.x is what you'll need.

Skype only requires that you have the means of being heard and hearing - most laptops these days have both a mic and speakers, or you can even use your iPhone (and others) via either wifi or 3G. So, if you have speakers, and no mic, all you'll need is a mic. If you have neither, that's when there's a fair bit to do, or, alternatively, a headset with mic...

The point of TW's action is the "generally perceived as" clauses both the FDA and MHRA have in their "this makes it a medicine" armoury.
However, as I understand it, if it gets to court, it's the general perception at the time. So, if all forums follow suit, and we can get the idiot vendors who are still flogging "quit" kit to stop being toerags, then it's possible that the "general perception" of e-cigs can be shown to be that they are an alternative way of smoking, and not a way of quitting.
Leaving aside the emotive "smoking" word for the moment, this is quite an important step - changing the perception of the masses about what these things are. that's the point - if the general public see them as an alternative way of continuing their habit but with a much reduced risk, then great - and my feeling is that, although BAT will be seeking an MA, they'll sell 'em as being exactly as I've described above - the closest thing to smoking you can get without lighting a ciggy and chancing caner and death.

The thing about all of this is that it's really arrant nonsense on behalf of all governments. It's nanny state gone mental. My personal belief is that, as an adult, I'm responsible for my own wellbeing, and, should I decide I'd like to eat sandwiches of rabid fox droppings and leaves from the cannabis plant, it's my business and nobody else's. Unfortunately, government tends to like to control things, and therefore is almost deciding how we must think.
So, unfortunately, we are left in a position where we need to modify our vocabulary somewhat in order not to give them the fuel they need to burn us. Orwell had everything but the year right...
