Very nice finish. What was the answer to your sandpaper question, then? I might be tempted to give my Aga T2 the treatment...

Thanks for the info, sej016.
It looks as though my design is going to work - I had my doubts until I saw this switch - but it's going to be a tad more expensive in parts than I imagined.
Also, time to scour ebay for a Dremel, I think. Most of my tools are positively medieval.

A lovely piece of work, if a little ornate for my taste in pipes. For my money, the first picture with the tank attached - which I am too much of a n00b to be able to identify - and the curved stem looks the best combination.
Can I ask you about the firing switch? It looks like exactly what I'll need for my planned pipe mod. You remove the switch to replace the battery? Is there any locking mechanism? What's the depth of the switch assembly? Where'd'ya geddit? And do you know if they do 'em in brass?
While I'm asking impertinent questions - how deep does the 510 connector extend into the bowl? (I'd like my stem section to be as short as possible, and raked more steeply upwards than this, so the depth of the connector is a limiting factor in my design)

I use my own home steeped tobacco concentrates for my mixes and as an ex pipe smoker some of them are pretty close, particularly a vanilla tobacco I'm using at the moment, just have to remember how I made it. Dave Oooh! Can you recommend any learning materials for home steeping concentrates, Dave? I've had clearance to try and raise some tobacco in a friend's garden next year, but the steeping & generally preparation of natural produce into concentrates is something so far outside my expertise (ha! my expertise!) that I wouldn't necessarily know a good instructional Youtube from a bad one. Still, next year, no rush. I want to develop a nice Deep & Rich & Interesting pipe tobacco juice at some point, so I think I'll be investigating that Shire Malt also.

I don't qualify, and I have a bottle anyway, but this might be a good place to ask: any theories about the flavrz going on in this Vapefest 2013 juice? I'm pretty keen on it, but I can't begin to guess what's in it.

I'm literally two days ahead of you, steven: brought my Aga T2 home from Vapefest after the weekend, also my first rebuildable tank atty, and like you, I had it right on my third attempt at a coil. I did take some inspiration from a Youtube video, discussing the tendency for the wire to pop near the centre post, which is apparently A Thing, not just us being n00bs. I put a little brass washer beneath the top nut on the centre post - after *filing it down to size* - so that the gap from the wick to the centre post was as narrow as I could make it, without touching. The coil wire lays across the washer, on its way to the centre post, and that solved the wire popping problem. Now vaping con brio. Happy days.

I was at the last meet, which was the first time I'd ever met any vapers, after nearly six months of cig-alikes. I didn't know a mod from Paul Weller. I joined UKVapers the same day, and AAEC the following day, I think. Since then I've become obsessed. Researching, asking questions, and shopping. More shopping than I've done in years, for anything that wasn't food. It's quite amazing what can happen in a month. It's even got me blogging again, after more than a year (link in sig). And doing a little woodwork (I haven't mentioned the woodwork on the blog yet, but I may have something finished by 21st Sept.) Ooooh look forward to seeing the woodwork. Wouldn't be a mod stand would it? might be. might also be an atty stand for recoiling. Prototypes & practising, basically. the woody part of the operation is very nearly done, I've been looking for some nice stain/wax finish (which the crappy salvaged timber is definitely going to need). Something whose price doesn't give me an aneurysm. And there'll be fancy bits, about which I will say no more, for now...

This will be my first Vapefest, and I can scarcely believe how excited I am at the prospect - especially considering that a month ago I wasn't even aware that there *was* a vaping subculture, and I'd never heard of Vapefest. It's been a very long time, actually, since I've felt this excited about *anything*. What is happening to me???

Thanks for this, digicig. I'll be linking to this one from the blog, when I get to discussing the (vaunted) prohibition... AFTERTHOUGHT: It strikes me that "normalising" vaping, as very distinct from smoking, ought to have a positive and hopefully persuasive effect on smokers - not just that "hey, look at us, nicc'ing it up without so much as a..." but that it becomes a generally less freakish sight, and nudges more people to give it a try.

I think, as with the proposed medicalisation of vaping, the authorities will have some very difficult questions to answer, if bans are put in place. If past experience is any guide, they will deal with this by ignoring them, and answering the questions they prefer. As with so many areas of life, if you have the power, you don't need to be right; if you don't have power...let's just say that being right isn't as much help as you'd imagine. Discretion being the better part of TCB, I see the cig-alike form factor continuing to be a part of our lives for a while yet. All in black, perhaps. with an opaque black cap over the LED

Just heard on the news, banned in stations and trains on the advice of the british medical association no less! it is hard to tell the difference between smoking and vaping apparently grrrrr Is there a link for this? I'd be interested to read the BMA's justification for this nonsense. I take it that said justification is not based on anything so vulgar as evidence? In all fairness, though, I suppose it *is* difficult to tell the difference between smoking and vaping, if you're a numpty.

Like your letter, it will be interesting to read the response. In my opinion Labour MPs involved with the legislation have already taken big P's dollar (promise of a lucrative board room position on leaving politics or whatever). Even if I'm right that shouldn't deter you from writing. Good luck and thanks from us all for making the effort. Well, yes, I fear you may be right, but I am of a mind to write the letter, rather than not write the letter. I must admit, I'm one of those odd people who found the Labour party unsupportably right wing even *before* Tony Blair took it to hell, and it's been a long time since I engaged with politics. I don't think I'd even signed a petition in, oooh, twenty years, until this one came up on my radar. Vaping is changing me in some very unexpected ways. What is happening to me?

(I posted this earlier on UKVapers, and I'm reposting it here to solicit comments and criticisms before I send it out into the world. I wrote it as the realisation dawned - call me slow, I can take it - that it is the Labour party, of all people, and their allies in the EU, who are pushing the anti- e-cig agenda.)
