Well I personally think they do a lot more than meets the eye. They keep the constitution and our civil and religious freedoms for one and I for one am grateful for that... God save the Queen!!! That would be marvellous if there actually was a Constitution. As always, it's a fudge of bits and pieces here and there, but nothing collated and put in black and white under that heading. Prone to the whims, arrogance and prejudices of various law lords, governments and other lackeys.

It's only drizzled here and the kittens weren't fazed by it at all. Just curious about their wet feet and that funny stuff they've only come across in a bowl so far. I doubt they'll be bothered by storms, as the elder cats here don't give a monkeys about them and the wee wans will pick up from them.

Another person of royalty that the tax payer will have to fund for. I knew this was going to come up and have soooo resisted in responding. BUT... the 'net' income to the UK is positive, the two 'lads', Wills & Harry have both done, and are still doing jobs that the majority of us would not do... i.e. fighting in Afghanistan & 'search & rescue' operations. We do not choose our parents, but this current generation of 'royals' are people to be proud of. This may of course change and then probably, my opinion. But while we have these with us, I wish them well, plus some 'escapism' is good for all of us in this sometimes dreadful world. Yes, there are 'hangers on' but in any family you'll get the 'black sheep', I have no time for Andrew, but I feel they are addressing these issues, and as for the Queen & Phil, would you still get out of bed at the crack of dawn, at their age, to attend some boring function, but knowing it was helping others. You know something? I'm not a royalist and can't stand the ass-licking buffons who crawl out of the woodwork to appear on the telly at times like this; but I actually agree with what you wrote there. This lot are my generation (Lizzie was already on the throne when I was born) and I've grown up sort of knowing them - much moreso than any previous generations of royalty were ever known by the public (even the public fascination with Victoria wasn't fed as much of the minutiae as we are) and on the whole I find them tolerable. Come the Revolution, I think I'll spare them.

Taken from another place; As a guitarist, I play many gigs. Recently I was asked by a funeral director to play at a graveside service for a homeless man. He had no family or friends, so the service was to be at a pauper’s cemetery in the back country. As I was not familiar with the backwoods, I got lost. I finally arrived an hour late and saw the funeral guy had evidently gone and the hearse was nowhere in sight. There were only the diggers and crew left and they were eating lunch. I felt badly and apologized to the men for being late. I went to the side of the grave and looked down and the vault lid was already in place. I didn’t know what else to do, so I started to play. The workers put down their lunches and began to gather around. I played out my heart and soul for this man with no family and friends. I played like I’ve never played before for this homeless man. And as I played ‘Amazing Grace,’ the workers began to weep. They wept, I wept, we all wept together. When I finished I packed up my guitar and started for my car. Though my head hung low, my heart was full. As I opened the door to my car, I heard one of the workers say, “I never seen nothin’ like that before and I’ve been putting in septic tanks for twenty years.” Apparently, I’m still lost…

We desperately need rain! The NEDS at the corner have totally kicked of, they've been building up to it all week, but tonights shenanigans are totally beyond a joke I read, somewhere, years ago, the police in various American cities keep an eye on the thermometer, as hot sticky weather sees a rise in violent crime and riots. They'd normally see much more of an effect from it over there than we would here, but the same factors are coming into play.

I may bitch about the heat but I am used to working outdoors in all weathers and saw many a daft bugger get heat stroke and/or bad burns when I was working as a street sweeper. Apologies to anyone squeamish for that last bit, but some personal experiences are worth sharing to underline dangers. Yeah, it creeps up on you unexpectedly, as we're not used to it here and it's only by personal experience the lesson is rammed home (well, to anyone with any degree of sense, that is). My first close call was when I was hillwalking up the Great Glen and the sun was splitting the sky. The day started out cool enough and as it warmed up I was finding plenty of fresh, cool water to cool down with (I'd also carried a couple of litres of weak orange juice) but on the return leg, with the sun still beating down I realised I wasn't thinking straight and it was getting harder to concentrate. Finding a stream with a passable sized pool, I sat in it for half an hour until I felt better. By the time I got back down the road, onto the bike and back to the campsite, I was fairly recovered from the initial heat shock, but the effects were with me for several days. I've been careful about that since.

There was a major double-burst of mains water pipes in the village which has affected supplies miles up the roads, much to my surprise, as I thought my supply came from the other direction. Three days now, the water has been a miserable trickle out of the tap and not enough head on it to reach the tank up in the attic, so no cold showers for me. Tonight, the pressure's back to normal, the tank's filled right up and if it's still ok in the morning I'll be right in there (shower, not tank). I feel all claggy and horrible.

Don't need a mod with built in torch, my last outstanding item from FT arrived today. Great if you want to blind people, this is only rated at 700lumens - would not want to get in front one of the higher rated ones. The difference between high and low is not great either, can hardly notice it. I find the 700 or 800 lm ones are bright enough and the big drawback with higher power is battery life, of course. I have a couple of C8s which are a nice size and a clone of a TK35 for general mucking around with - it's a good compromise with four power settings (lowest mode is great for just moving around and would probably last for months on a charge) and the daft flashy modes are hidden until you want them. One of the C8s will be getting a different controller put in to get rid of the daft flashy modes, too.

It got to 32°c in the bedroom yesterday & last night. Was a tad too hot & I went up earlier & it was 32.8° I found that was the big drawback of insulating the bedroom ceilings. Great improvement in the winter, of course, but in the summer I can't have the windows open after dark else every flying bug gets in and the heat upstairs is intolerable. No wonder air conditioning is getting more popular.

Aw, some Grade-A engineering in that, Lobey. I always wanted an engine in my bogey, but had to put up with a younger bother to act as propulsion unit. We did take it in turns, though; I wasn't a complete bastard.
