a solution to "the clones"

Let's try & put this a different way then:

I work as a multi disciplined IT geezer on all operating systems, my preferred is red hat (free OS based on Linux) but for ease of use and "it just works" I run red hat/windows/etc as virtual machines inside mac OSX.

copies - I dont believe I have ever bought a clone, never willingly anyways.

So where do we stand with playing mp3 files on a Linux system using Lame (which is surely a 'clone' of the mp3 codec)?

Yes, because part of your job as an inventor is to make it as cheaply as you can while making a profit.

(& do you have separate licences for each and every one of your windows VMs? ) - no - some clients want to give me a laptop for their work, I take a licenced copy of their windows build and use it as a VM so I dont own all of that but it is legit and I have authority from the licensee to be using it

I don't want nor require a ' solution ' to clones thank you . . . I'm old enough to make my own mind up about where and what I spend my money on.

In my time as a vaping consumer and a consumer in general, I've bought originals and the clones/copies of them.

There's a market for both in my opinion.
