Don't want to get into the religions... just a discussion point...

I'm all for supporting everyone's beliefs, providing it's not violence...but this story, if true, has me gobsmacked...

It smacks to me of 'political correctness' gone mad. Why would anyone take a job where they knew, fully well, they may be asked to perform duties which contradicted their religious beliefs. If they knew that then why take the job, other than to cause trouble down the line, and scream 'victimisation'.

It is ridiculous. Just been listening to a phone in show on the radio about this. Even Muslims were phoning in saying if it bothers them that much don't work in a food shop!! Problem solved. One Muslim guy said that every Muslim driver in the UK is going against Islam anyway because insurance is not allowed in their religion, but, as he rightly said, if he chooses to live in a non Muslim country and the law states it is a legal requirement to have car insurance he has to forego his beliefs.

There were some people ringing in stating that it would be a good idea to have special checkouts for workers who won't sell alcohol or pork. FFS, if that's the case, half the checkouts will be designated to umpteen different religious beliefs and the animosity from customers will be astronomical. The world is going mad.

Here a majority of convenience stores are owned by Asians/Muslims and they sell booze and pork products from there stores and laugh all the way to the Bank+

I believe the Australians say "live here, live by our rules, integrate into our society as it is or leave".

Why should we bend over to accept their single minded selfish attempts to alter our society to suit themselves?!

I've worked in many muslim countries including saudi, and there is no way they will change their behaviour there to suit my beliefs or way of life (well saudi is the worst - everything closes for prayer time, even if you are waiting in a sue to get served at mcdonalds, when the mosque starts, they close and kick everyone out). Some (the emirates) welcome us up to a point (i lived in abu dhabi for 18 months) and you can buy pork products from spinneys but have to get a liquor licence to buy take out booze from special shops. but in my experience the locals treat you with contempt. Then you have indonesia, malaysia and egypt that are muslim and christian mixed but much more open to other cultures.

You have to conform to their beliefs in their country or be in trouble with the police. Perhaps if they had the same threat here, they wouldn't be so up themselves.

You just saved me a google search fiddles I didn't know whether he was correct or not but it seems he was. I am also aware that they have special banking requirements due to not being able to accept normal loans due to interest payments, which is also not allowed under Islam.... Geez, at this rate I might convert myself!!

Having recently spent 6 months working in the predominantly Muslim country of Indonesia, I would like to say that the non extremist, the huge majority of Muslims, are the nicest people I have worked with.
We need to be careful about categorising people, the Nazis were mostly Christians!

In that case, if you also wish to go work in a shop that sells alcohol and pork products aren't you able to comply with the remit of that retailer and, instead go work in a shoe shop or the fashion department of M&S instead of the food side. It's the same as a teetotaler going to work in a pub and saying they are willing to sell you a tonic water but I won't sell you the gin.
