another good explanation OneDay - makes me feel itsy bitsy tiny weeny smarter If you want smaller then you need to make nano coils Clivia now come on dont confuse them they are just starting to get used to micro coils

edit : btw I also thought micro coils are smaller - hence all my questions - and micro - ehm does mean small For my normal evod/protank coils I use 0.2 kanthal A1 wire wrapped 5 times around a 1.5mm drill bit. I then stick a bit of cotton wool through it, altho' I do need to use glasses and a magnifying lamp to see what I'm doing! This gives me a coil of about 1.8 Ohms. Conversely, my "micro" coil is about 8 wraps of 0.25 Kanthal wrapped around a 2.5 drill bit which gives me about the same or lower ohms. This about the same width coil as a normal one so still fits ok in the head. As others have said, the beauty of the micro coil/cotton wool combo is that you just whip out the cotton wool, give the coil a dry burn to get rid of the gunk and then stick in some more cotton wool. I can get about 3-4 weeks out of a micro coil depending on the juice. For my Russian clone, I use 0.3 kanthal wrapped about 7 or 8 times round a 3mm drill bit & get about 1.4 ohms. I like this cos its a doddle putting the cotton wool through such a "large" hole compared to my normal evod/protank coils. Also, I've started wrapping around an M2 bolt (1.5mm, 2mm and 3mm in diameter respectively) as the the threads are really fine and once you get the wire wrapping into the grooves between the threads you get a really tight coil that can be left as is or squished to make a micro coil. Just grab some wire and have a go - what have you wasted but a couple of quid on a spool of wire?

That's a brilliant idea of wrapping on the threads of a bolt, will give that a go next time I have to rebuild, will try both leaving as is and pressing the coils together

ha! I feel like i 'm about to go blind! . . . . from the amount of recoiling videos I've watched of late on youtube. I dither between the 'looks simple enough?' to the 'am I mad!? no way can I do this' so instead of deliberating, I'm just going on with giving it a shot. Microcoils for protanks, then maybe trying silica wicks on a dripper?... if I can manage that then I shall crack on up, one day I might be smugly wrapping mesh and telling everyone its simple enough ( thats the eternal optimist in me ) if not - least I can learn to recoil for my protanks, single coil

If you can do it, brilliant. If not, it's not the end of the world and you can fall back on pre-made coils or replacement heads. But you never know til you try

thanks a lot Greg - can I use the jump ring mandrel instead of the needle ? - cause the link to the needle did not work like the torch - the fact that it stand on it's own You can use the mandril to wrp the coil yes, it has 1.5,2..... Steps so all the sizes you're likely to need and you wrap against the shoulder to keep the coils nice and tight. but the needle is also handy to mount the coil on when fitting to the head, I found a 16 gauge blunt needle better for this as the 14 didn't always drop in the head slots. Check out shinys tutorial and you'll see how the blunt needle is used to support the coil in position while you faff around connection the ends of your coil up.
