more coil questions

Hi all - have now read the great thread of Shiny how to re wick and wire the coils - I don't know how often - and although there is a really nice member here who is already willing to do the coils for me I still would like to know please :

when I dismantle my coils there are 2 strands of wick - the one through the wire and one above - is it enough just to use the one through the wire or do I need to put a little wick on top as well - also if I carefully pull out the wick would it be ok just to fiddle in a new wick - would that work or do I need to replace the wire always as well and finally do I really need to burn the wire first ?

Remind me what you are using Clivia? Silica or micro coils

Unless it floods or has too much juice you shouldn't need a wick on top. Burning the wire reduces it's springyness. If you're okay coiling without that fine. But you may find it easier to just flame the wire with a lighter till it glows (doesn't take long - don't frazzle it LOL)

I dismantle my protank coils and there are two strands of wick on top. I just take it off and make a micro coil. Not a prob. No wick on top. works fine for me.

Hi Clivia Ive been doing these for a few weeks now love doing them, If ive made a new coil and put cotton wool in for my wick after a week i just gently pull the wick out little by little then check the coil is nice and central a few dry burns and blow anything thats on the coil off then re wick with some cotton ball, Works fine for me been using the same coil now for 3 weeks.

Clivia if your trying to remove silica wick from a standard Evod or protank head I would imagine that's quite fiddly be use as you pull the old silica out it may well dislodge your coil and similarly hen replacing with new silica you'll disturb the coil again s&i if your doing this you'll need to dry burn the coil afterwards and then tweak the coils to make sure there not touching each other and creating hot spots.

If your using microcoils then it's a coddle as the coils need to touch each other and the coil is far more rigid. With a microcoil try cotton wool as per shinys guide. When you want to replace the cotton just cut one side close to the coil and then pull it out from the other side from which you cut.

I only started with the microcoils last Saturday Clivia i took the heads apart & did new coils for each head, fitted them in & then put the cw through, i don't know if its possible to use the existing coils but i know that when new micro coils are done you can just replace cw a couple of times without replacing the coils if you carefully remove the old cw as stated on shinys guide.
I too was not very confident about using a blow torch for the coils but i just got stuck in & did it, you just need a chefs blowtorch or one of those pen torches they don't cost much.

thanks Greg - gosh - just sounds all very fiddly and complicated - guess I wait till a next vape meet up - to be shown - if I have done it once under guidance am sure it will be much easier than it sounds now

Clivia it does sound complicated when you try and write it down but microcoil and cotton really is a doddle once you've done it a couple times, if you follow Super-Shiny guide you can't go wrong. The hardest part is learning to use the right amount of CW. When you look at the close ups in the guide it looks really thick but it's really Hardly any at all.
Best device would be get the correct tools as per the guide, not looked at it for a while but those eBay mandrels are really useful for wrapping your coils around.

if you are using a bog standard protank coil then yes you replace the wire every time. Not if you are using a micro coil. If you are using bog standard - pin as a template/guide protank coil then yes you replace the coil every time. Does anyone have the link for ratfinkz's video as that really helped me?

thanks both Greg and @johanino - and now I have a big ( maybe stupid ) question - what do you understand is a micro coil compared to the 'normal' coil of a protandk as they look pretty much the same to me

Yeah they will do Clivia.

A normal coil has silica and about 5 wraps and is made by putting the silica next to a pin or paperclip, wrapping the wire round the silica and the paper clip, then trimming and fitting

A microcoil you make before you add the wick. You add the wick when it's in the head and pull through

Does that make sense?

Can you dry burn coils on a protank? I know you can't really on the micro coil? Or am I being in need of more meds?
