Sorry about this, but it's annoying me. I think I've tried just about every brand of fresh & frozen fish and none of them come close to the fish I used to get as a youth from my local chippie. They are usually just a brick, and although the packaging tempts you into a vision of fish as you knew it, it's nothing like it. Surely we can get them on 'trade descriptions' or something because they take our money and deliver a very disappointing experience. It may not have helped my mood as I swept most of the peas down the plughole as I tried to drain them! I did say it was off topic... but it may ring a bell with some of you who are bored, like me, tonight.

There is a really good chippy in a place called charmouth about 20 miles from where I live. Every now and again we drive there just for the fish and chips.

There is a really good chippy in a place called charmouth about 20 miles from where I live. Every now and again we drive there just for the fish and chips. Spooky, I know Charmouth. Used to get mine from Lyme Regis & Seaton after a night on the 'booze'... before the breathaliser!

Totally agree, Fish and Chips do not taste like they used too, good old fish and chips has gone out the window when it comes to taste Fish and Chip shops are scrimping on costs at the cost of taste

Fish and chips also depends where you live. They should be cooked in lard not oil- however if you have only ever have them cooked in oil you would hate lard. They should be served in newspaper , not a golden coloured polystyrene carton. They should have proper salt and vinegar put on them in the chip shop. The chips should be fat, we are not American or even trying to be. They should be fresh - not warmed up. I have only ever had fish and chips as a treat, and at todays prices where I live ( over £6 ) it will stay that way. However it was a treat, and you darn well enjoyed them. Our local chippy is now dire,and I used to travel there when I wasn't local it was so good. We have the cartons, or a polystyrene tray , the fish has shrunk, scraps are non exhistant, and the amount of chips has halved. The fish is still good, but god it repeats on you, and the chips are scabby and scrappy. What is going on I have no clue, but they are no longer proper fish and chips.

I think you'll never find anything close to chippie fish & chips as a frozen or fresh product in a supermarket! If you deep fried them they'd probably get closer to that taste you know...
I have a good chippie near me which is wonderful - but the best one I can remember was in Lancaster as a student. People would queue down the street and round the corner for that place.
Have you considered making your own? Batter is pretty simple, get a nice piece of cod/haddock (depending on where you are on the north/south fish divide), batter and shallow fry in a deepish pan. Chips are harder without a deep fat fryer - but some decent oven chips will do if you have a good bit of fish.

Still remember my old fish and chip shop in hackney (London)...maria's fish and chips....OMG they was to die for, you would think me now being in Bournemouth by the seaside that they would be even better.....NOT Still miss Pie and Mash in liquor, ain't seen one in Bournemouth

Still miss Pie and Mash in liquor, ain't seen one in Bournemouth There's one near my work in Greenwich, it's surprisingly good considering that most of the food places in the area cater to the throngs of tourists. It's one of the reasons that my new year diet is on hold...

Many years ago fish & chips were cooked in `beef dripping fat` today they are cooked in `vegetable oils`. Also in days gone bye, fish was either "cod","hake", today who knows what you are eating `pollock,`rock`,etc. Potatoes were mainly of `King Edwards`for the chips, today who knows which type of potato is used. Yes times are better these days, but in certain area`s the old days ingredients have been replaced with inferior produce & products. Raffles I also miss the fish & chips of the past. But it`s gone, we now accept "fast foods" artificial flavours and not natural products.
